Bahr in race for Cougars' road trip

COUGARS defender Lisa Bahr must survive a fitness test tomorrow night to be cleared to face Woods Panthers in Saturday's Subway Cup in Jamestown.

The goal defence must prove herself after being forced from the court in the third quarter against Contax on Friday night with a knee problem.

Coach Scott Waddington said Bahr was in doubt for the country trip but he hoped she would be able to take court in the battle for third spot.

While both clubs have a 3-2 win-loss record, the Panthers are above fourth-placed Cougars through superior percentage.

This will be the Cougars' second trip to Jamestown for a Subway Cup encounter after meeting Tango there in 2007. "That was a great experience," Waddington said. "It was the opening of the new venue and the crowd was loud."

Waddington hopes Cougars show a season of improvement. "I'm hoping we are a little better than last year. With the reserves winning the premiership last year we have some confidence in the players in the twos.

"That gave us belief. For a long time we have expected to be competitive but it has been OK to lose. We don't want it to be OK to lose. Self-belief makes a difference and that is growing."

Cougars has benefited from rookie Steph Noak's decision to test herself in the State League after switching from Gawler Central

Another member of the Gawler Central outfit which won the Barossa competition last year with an unbeaten record was Waddington's daughter Jade.

Goal shooter Carolyn Davey also has had an impact, having taken her game to a new level this year.

"Steph has been outstanding and will play every game this year," Waddington said. "Carolyn has stepped up."

With the league game being held in Jamestown, the Reserves match will be contested at ETSA Park tonight.
